HOMESTEAD, FL - The Faith Motorsports #89 Dodge Charger plowed hard into the wall two laps into morning practice at the Homestead-Miami Speedway Friday, ending the team's 2006 season.
Thankfully, driver Morgan Shepherd was not injured in the crash, which heavily damaged the car's front and right side, the team announced.
"I had just got it up to speed and the it let go and carried into the wall,'' Shepherd said of the crash.
Shepherd had piloted the Racing With Jesus Dodge just two laps around the speedway before the accident. The team said a bolt holding the car's sway bar rubbed the tire, causing it to rupture.
The team had just arrived in the Miami area early Friday morning after annoucing its post-entry for the race on Thursday afternoon.
"We really had high hopes for this weekend. That's why we went without a sponsor, because we were confident of our chances," said team co-owner Dana Tomes. "This is a terrible way to end the season, but looking at the big picture, it isn't crippling because the car would have to have had a new body hung over the winter anyway and it appears that the chassis only suffered a little damage in the A-frame area, and the engine appears OK."
The team will pack up and head back for its North Carolina home later today. Meanwhile, the Faith Motorsports staff will continue working on sponsorship efforts for the 2007 season and will begin making announcements in early December about the team's plans and sponsors for next year.
