Shelmerdine is rebuked for Bush sticker: In a decision announced Tuesday [Dec 26th], the FEC [Federal Election Commission] sent an “admonishment letter” to Kirk Shelmerdine Racing. Kirk Shelmerdine was the former pit boss [crew chief, 4 Cup champinships] for the late Dale Earnhardt. Back in 2004 Shelmerdine placed a “Bush-Cheney ’04” decal on his rear quarter panel, which was otherwise unencumbered by advertising. Democratic activist Sydnor Thompson complained to the FEC, and the agency found that Shelmerdine “may have made an unreported independent expenditure or a prohibited corporate expenditure.” Former commissioner Bradley Smith dissented in one of the case’s early votes and blogged about the result this week. He has written that in reference to the FEC’s $250 expenditure limit, “evidence is strong that the market value of Shelmerdine’s rear quarter panel was approximately $0, give or take $249.”(Examiner)(12-29-2006)

This is one of the funniest things I've read! A political organization taking a pot-shot at a S&P driver for supporting my most hated president (sorry to bring politics into the board discussions!) just cannot be beat! You go FEC!!! Wonder if they know that a 1/4 panel sponsorship for even the most underdog of teams is valued at around $15,000?

I'm just wondering why they're not trying to go after Brian Conz too, if they're going after drivers who had election things on their cars (Conz's #05 Busch car had Bush-Cheney '04 on his car in his attempt at Daytona in February of that year)

Isn't this typical of our Washington beaurocrats? Two years after the fact and then they finally respond to it. They're probably having trouble trying to justify their existance so they went ahead and dug this one up.
I hope Kirk wiped his *** with the letter. I would have.

, “evidence is strong that the market value of Shelmerdine’s rear quarter panel was approximately $0, give or take $249.”(Examiner)(12-29-2006) OUCH!!! So can we expect the Racing with Jesus team to be banned because it endorses religion? I honestly don't find the deal to be different than Heath Shuler and Jerry Gilgore sponsoring NASCAR teams recently.
