Carl Long, piloting the #1 Romeo Guest Construction Ford for Long Brothers Racing, was victorious in Saturday night's championship late model race at Orange County Speedway! Long, a former track champion who started his racing career at Orange County, showed he stills knows how to get around the legendary 3/8th-mile oval.
The race started out smooth for Long as he worked his way up the field from his 7th place starting position through the early stages of the race. Long had his sights set on the lead as the end of the first 150-lap segment came near a close. With about 10 laps to go in the first of the two 150-lap segments of the race, a wheel hub on the right front wheel of Long's #1 Ford broke while running in 2nd place. The car became a serious handful to drive. Carl Long nursed his ailing vehicle to the end of the first segment in 8th position, barely hanging on to the lead lap. The teams were given a ten-minute break to make any changes on their cars before they were allowed back on track to resume the remaining 150 laps of competition. The Long Brothers Racing team were able to fix the broken wheel hub and a few other damages sustained from the incident. Carl restarted from the back of the pack but quickly made his way back up the standings. With around 40 laps remaining in the race, Long was able to make his way to the top of the heap, and took the lead of the race! Carl Long then began to check out on the field, and accumulated nearly a half-track lead on 2nd place before a debris caution was thrown with just 15 laps remaining in the 300 lap race. After fending off a couple lead challengers in the final laps of the event, Long pulled out to a three or four car length lead to take the checkered flag of the Orange County Speedway Late Model Championship Race! Second place went to #46-Jon Denning, third to #00-David Tripplett, fourth to Richard Childress Racing driver #26-Peyton Sellers, and fifth to #06-Terry Dease.
Great going Carl! Well-deserved win! ;D
